Most of the Taupo Rivers have gone a little quiet Trout wise. This is a funny time of year, the fishing can be fickle.

What a great run in!

Last Sunday I took a Wellington angler onto the Waitahanui for a half day. We spotted and fished to heaps of trout but they all had “”Lock Jaw”" on Sunday, apart from the nice 4 pound Jack that he took in the Lower section. Fought brilliantly by John, in a nasty little pool too, it was one of the best trout I have taken for a very long time, in Taupo. John is about to shout himself a new rod and reel set up!!

6 pounds of fun!

Yesterday a friend and I shot over to the Whakapapa. There is a beat on this great river that I wanted to suss out and so a good recce was in order. Arron and I got there at around 6.30 am, Brrrr it’s getting cold in the morning!!!!! We walked for a good way before we began casting. I have NEVER come across a river, that is as horrible to walk on than the Whakapapa, and this trip in sealed that theory. We slipped and fell our way up the river for quite a few KM’s. At times the only way we could move was to link up, (I think he just liked cuddling me). Most river crossings were done this way as well. Thats about it for bad remarks on the Whakapapa as the rest of it is all “mint”.  The scenery on this section was some of the best I have come across and the water is un- believable. For some reason the river fished hard this day and I will have to go back another time to see if it is the same then. In the end we hooked into 4 very nice fish all very similar to this beast. Not knowing what to expect on this section I took in my 7# and i’m glad I did, this jack was almost as long as my arm, his three spectacular leaps that he did will be imprinted in my mind for a very long time. I wish you were there with your camera clicking Brendon, it would have been front cover stuff!

I have been using the guiding services of Shane from dragon Fly River guides over the past two years. Part of this is the tricks of the trade he is so willingly to give up. Last summer he showed me his sliding indicators and we had a wonderful day on a small stream just outside of Taupo. I was very impressed with the hook up rate due to being able to fish the shallow water as well as the deeper pools. The material floated high in the water and did not slide down the indicator when false casting. These have helped my hook up rate tenfold ever since; I would not use anything else.

When I first saw the indicator that Shane was applying to my line I was a little sceptical. I have used sliding indicators before and have always had trouble with them dropping onto the Nymphs while casting, or simply sinking while in fast water. I was totally impressed with Shane’s indicators however and I landed more trout that day than I had ever done so before. The material floats well and the fact that you can target different depths is a huge bonus when it comes to summer fishing. Attaching them to your line is easy and they can be used time and time again. I fully recommend these to every angler out there.
