Wow, I love multi tools and this one is a hummer! Early in the season when I was checking out all my back country water I could have done with this little number. I tore up two sets of breathable waders early on, with the blackberry and gorse. If I had had one of these that would not have happened. It is in Camo which always looks good and makes me drool, plus the carry pouch is excellent, they thought on this one, it is light and dries fast after getting wet. Lesley growled at me as she thinks I have too many knives, I’m a chef, what can I say!!! This is certainly one for DUCK HUNTERS.

I should have put this up ages ago, (slack bastard). I got one of these months ago and it has now become one of the best items I have ever purchased for fishing. It is a Yo Yo shape contraption that enables you to tidily dispose of line on the river, for taking back home and getting rid of. How many times have you cut a couple of feet off you leader for all sorts of reasons and tried to stuff it down your waders or in a front pocket. It always springs out and you inevitably drop it somewhere before you get back to the car. With this brilliant, cleaver and practical device, you just wind it around the center and when you get home pull it apart, (it uses an O ring to keep the two half’s tightly together) you can fill it with a crap load of line and it keeps it right out of the way. I grieve badly all day if I happen to leave this at home, it has become an essential piece of fishing for me, and should be for all anglers. They retail for $14.50.

Gehrkers Fly Line Cleaner

Every Fly fisherman should have this at home or in his vest. I clean my lines about every third trip out. It makes a huge difference to the floating capability of your line and to the ease of that line sliding through your guides on the rod. Downstream nymphing is so much easier when the line is clean and you can throw small loops in behind your indicator as it drifts down. Mending becomes easier as the line sits on top of the water not in it, it lifts off the water nicely. It is also reassuring that by cleaning your line, you are increasing its life in use. Gehrkes Fly line Cleaner is a well renowned product that is priced fairly.

Sinking Leaders, (Rio)

Have you ever been nymphing happily up a river and then come to a DEEP slow moving pool that just begs to be wet lined but you didn’t bring your sinking line. Rio have a selection of different speed sinking leaders. Just attach with the simple loop to loop method onto your floating line and you instantly have an excellent sinking line. I have been using these with GREAT success on the Tongariro and because you have the floating line it makes it very easy to mend your line, enabling a good drift and swing through the pool. They are the perfect size to pop into a front pocket of your fishing vest

Are you sick of putting on a fresh indicator only to have it sink minutes after. For me there was nothing more annoying, not only is it harder to detect strikes, but a sub surfaceÂ indicator is aÂ damn good way to spook fish.Â My indicators are made from polypropylene and treated with three different, top quality products from Loon, (Tight Lines). I use Kevlar thread to bind the 14 individual strands together, making for an extremely hard wearing indicator that can last for months, when treated correctly. The indicator on the left has Wing Brite added to it making them highly visible in dim conditions, this is a little more expensive to make but are fantastic first thing in the morning. Being a guide I get to have a few casts with my clients rods here and there, and so have built up a good view of how different rods perform within different situations. This product review is based on two months of constant use of the above rod in weight 7. I firmly believe there are very few rods out there that can compete with the TiCr for value for money and performance on the water. from casting tight loops into a head wind or delicate little mendsÂ on some back water stream, this rod will perform brilliantly. I’m sure there are many of you out there who already subscribe to this brilliant New Zealand produced magazine. However for those who don’t, I fully recommend that you do. There are great articles from all over NZ, with the writers/fishermen being of the highest quality. There are some awesome pics in there as well.

The next issue that is about to go on sale is a big one with heaps to offer. So keep an eye out for it wherever good books and magazines are sold. You will definitely not regret this one.

This has got to be one of the best things on my vest. Apart from the fact that they look cool,(you have to look cool to fish properly). They are brilliant for taking hooks out of Trout and fingers!! also a useful tool for crimping on split shot. The clamp enables you to fix them onto any part of your vest.
