Lake Taupo Trout Fishing And Guiding Report For The 01st Of November 2010

Hey All,

Late last season I found this amazing river in the back of beyond, (but well within driving distance from Taupo). I only fished it once but was wickedly impressed with its waters and landscape. I had one of the best “recce”  days of the season on here, with trout like this up to 4.5 pounds and a few that just beat the crap out of me so I didn’t get a look at them!

I tried to guide on here early in October but it pretty much came unstuck with water volumes and car sucking bogs!! I have waited for things to dry up and yesterday took Malcolm from Taupo Quad bikes in there for a look. This is a tough walk with A slotted Papa Rock Base, where wading can go from, really easy, to”” aww shit this is horrible”” very quickly. Malcolm is useful in finding paths and tracks and so we had a much easier trip coming back and probably saved ourselves a whole  hour!!

The fishing was much tougher than it had been late last season, and by the looks of things this river like all the others in NZ has had its fair share of high water. We caught heaps of trout but they were certainly much smaller than last years and they had seen some fairly hard conditions over winter. Even so we got bashed by a few bigger trout and the further we moved away from the car the better the fishing got. OMG some of the water is mind blowing, it SCREAMS trout and when you KNOW you are going to hook up, it becomes a heap of fun!!

I believe the fishing will improve on this river but it may just have to wait until January when the bigger Browns and Rainbows cruise up, The dry fly action on here in December January should be amassing! It was a great  day in my opinion as I found a much easier way of getting back to the car and the flies I am now tying, are slaying them!!!!
