Hey All,

I had a hard time on all the river this week as the calm weather took its toll on the running trout. The Tongariro is the place to be when the conditions are like this and so I guided on there Thursday and then again on Friday. The first saw me back with Derrik and Vern from Auckland, I have guided both of these guys before and had a great day although as I say the fishing was hard! I had gone onto the Tongariro on Wednesday to scout it out and hopefully find a run of fresh trout to follow up. Luck had it that I found them straight away and followed them through two pools pulling out or hooking up onto at least 11 trout. The condition of these fish is certainly better than last year but is down dramatically from the Waitahanui. I did keep a 4 pound Jack!

So on Thursday we started where I left off the day before and  immediately hooked up. This was not a good trout and sort of set the stage for the day. All The trout we hooked up into on Thursday were Jacks, were small and had been in the river for some time. The boys were desperate for fish to take home and so we kept two of the best, these would have pushed the scales to about 3 pounds. The funny thing was we only saw ONE other angler all day, I have never had that on the Tonagriro. Maybe the -4 start had something to do with it. One suck thing happened on this guide…. I did a deep crossing and forgot my Camera was around my neck and tucked into my vest, it is one VERY dead camera, sob sob. A great shame as I had some awesome shots on the card!

I wasn’t meant to guide on the Friday but a late night phone call had me up early for a half day venture back onto the Tonagriro and down the bottom wet lining. I was very surprised to hook up on the very first swing with a Red Rabbit and was even more surprised to find a trout of about 6 pounds splashing on the surface! This was promptly dropped by Nick who did the lock up on the reel trick, sigh!! We hooked up five more good trout in the next piece of water keeping three and that was that. Nick was after trout and the average size of these would have been 4.5 pounds. My five hour $200 guide turned into a two hour guide, both of us very happy!

So it seems that there are some good trout in the Tongariro but that they are packed into tight little groups.

Yesterday my son Steven and I went over to the Rangitaiki, fishing a small section around Aniwhenua first up. I was over there last month and had a blast here and so went back with the Video in the hope of getting you guys some footage!!! Hard going would be the call of the day here. I did hook up on a very good trout that took me by surprise, smoked me to the max then stuck it’s head into a big snag. Steven will do up the video today so check it out if you get the chance. We then went into the middle reaches of this stunning river and poked our noses into all sorts of nooks and crannies. Fishing was tough and I was surprised at this until we came across a member of the New Zealand fly fishing team and some of his friends, it seems they had been fishing in front of us all afternoon. hate that!! I watched Yoshi, Czech Nymph a small deep run, Wow what skill!! Good to know I am doing it right but just need to alter a few things slightly. This method is DEADLY although the jury is still out for me on ethics. This is coming from the man who uses split shot and double glo bugs so I don’t really have a problem with it! I love watching that indicator drop and this would probably be my one issue with it. Is it fly fishing??

I have uploaded a heap of new shots into the photo gallery page. If you would like a copy of any of them I will send it to you. Cost for each file is $5.00 These can be put onto your desktop as a back ground or blown up and placed on canvas. The price varies for this but most printing shops will do it from between $40 and $120. Maybe one of the pictures reminds you of a special time or place or you just like a relaxing sun set somewhere in your home.

Ok guys well thats it for now. We are going to get some wet stuff this week so keep an eye on the river levels. I have a special going at the moment for a full day two people max $350, I hope you can take me up on it.

Regards Shane
