I have managed to fish all of my favorite spots around Taupo this week, either guiding or just for a “Look C”.
I thought the cold weather we have been receiving would have killed the Cicada hatches, but they have been determined little buggers this year and were still chirping hard out on Thursday, in the Hine. I caught all my trout that day using a summer Nymphing Rig, I didn’t use the dry at all, had a blast.
All the rivers have trout in them. The cold snap pushed a few close in to the rips and up they went. I guided on the Tongariro Saturday and although we struggled I thought there were good numbers of trout in the section we were in and there were some great looking Rainbows too.
The Tauranga Taupo is low and clear but may not stay that way for long. We have some good rain coming in over the next 48 hours and the levels should come up. I need to go and have a good fish in here for myself, this week, so will be looking forward to that rain.
The Brown Trout Run in the Waitahanui has had a slow start this year, either that, or the poaching from a few years ago has finally had an impact! It really doesn’t get the attention it deserves from DOC there, (sorry guys)!! I have guided on here all summer and not seen one ranger. The tracks up above Burstal bridge are a disgrace and if they aren’t cut back this year, some really good water will be lost
I guided Back Country at the start of the week and although the Cicadas did come out to play, it wasn’t until well into the afternoon. We fished to some really good Browns and had a blast in doing so.
Hope you all have a great week.
