If I was going to have a fish in a local taupo River over the next few days it would have to be the Tongariro, there are a heap of trout in there and some of them are awesome! Even the quality of the Rainbows is excellent, we are going to have a great winter season.
I fished the Tongariro a few times over the weekend and each time managed to hook up in a fish that smoked us. I basically did from the main road bridge all the way up to the cliff pool and most of this water had good numbers of trout through it. I found the Cadis nymph to be taking most of the trout this weekend, especially Sunday.
This morning I popped into the upper Waitahanui for a look see. Wow there are heaps of big Browns in there. I must have seen at least 5 well over ten pounds, bloody frustrating things they are. I threw everything I had at them and never got a look! I managed to hook into a very nice Rainbow that totally took me to the cleaners. I was using my innovation 5# and I got taught a good lesson. As I say the trout are in fantastic condition, the fights from them so far this year have been great, a big mark up from previous years.
