Wow did the rain come down today on the Waitahanui. Paul and I were up early to try and get some video footage for the web site. The plan was to do the Nui then the Hine and if we had time shoot down to the TT. It started raining about 6.30 and by 7.00 am it was torrential!! So much so that I couldn’t really have the video out, if I kill it Lesley will have my nuts on a plate!!!We did manage one piece of footage and that hopefully will be on there later tonight. Man computers freak me out.
We were amazed at the number of trout in the river, but guys they are moving through fast. I counted at least ten going up past Reids in the space of about 5 minutes. We hooked a few but the takes were soft and we dropped everything decent this morning up there. Paul lost a great Jack after about a minutes fight that he said was the best fish of the season for him. I watched him drop a very nice fish later that would have gone 5 pounds easy!
The rain kept coming down!!!!!
We arrived at the Hine by 10.00am. It looked good, the water was not to high but it had that Hine colour to it. That’s about all it had in it though, skunked big time on here today. We talked to a guy that had come from the Tongariro and we asked him what the TT was looking like. He said it was brown and that there was only one car in the park. Based on this info we decided to scamper back to the Nui and do all the middle section. We had this all to ourselves for two whole hours. We picked up fresh run trout all the way through this section, nothing big but all good fresh run healthy fish. The only thing worth having on was the plain old Champagne Orange Dot glowies guys, all 15 fish nailed it today.
The rain has eased and hopefully the TT will drop somewhat, the Tonagriro is still fishable, up at about 38 but that should drop as well. This weekend could be a good one if you can get here.
