Well a busy week here in Taupo on all the rivers. I passed the TT on my way to the Tongariro lodge Friday afternoon and couldn’t count the number of cars parked there, it had to be close to 20 though. YUCK!!!!!!!
From what I have heard this weekend the Tonagriro has had a thrashing as well. There are fish coming out of there but it seems only in certain pools and those are getting a right royal thumping. Green Caddis seems to be taking fish there as I sold out of them this weekend.
I haven’t heard anything from the Hinemaiaia for ages and because of the gear i lost there last time I guided I have stayed away from it. The level has dropped and so I may have to go in and re do the lower section. It was a great river for me last season and fired all the way through into December, then the upper section opened up and it was all on again.
The Waitahanui is PISS!!!!!! I have no idea where the bloody fish are in here at the moment. Three times now I have picked up one or two in the first piece of water I fish for the day and then get skunked after that. Just before the last downpour we had, the river was fishing brilliantly and then every angler in Taupo descended on it due to everything else being flooded, I think the trout have spooked all the way up. It was perfect on Saturday with colour and flow and yet not a single fish was to be seen. They better be in there for the Tongariro/ Waitahanui fish off or I will be devastated.
Take care out there.
