I had a great morning on the Waitahanui yesterday guiding a small group, (yes a group) of guys who just wanted to experience fly fishing for a few hours. We did the middle and some of the upper pools on the Nui.
The level has dropped considerably here and it is back to being Gin clear. The day was sunny and very warm. Not all of the pools had trout but there are fish in both of these sections and we managed a few brief hookups. I was leap frogging these guys two by two up the river and when we got to Totara I put Malcolm in the lower section. After giving him instructions on how to fish it I watch him drift through a few times, (about ten). I didn’t think he was getting down enough and so I added a little bit of weight, bang first cast he hooked into a beautiful Hen of four pounds that was very solid. He fought it well and it came to the net without any problems, not bad going for his first trout in a tricky pool to land a good fish.
Swirl had fish moving around but they were not interested in us at all. We had a brief hook up in Snag and then it was time to head home.
A good morning and very few anglers on the water.
I am out again this morning for a full day and so will report back tonight.
Regards Shane, (who is OVER shifting)
