Lake Taupo Trout Fishing Report For The 14th Of August 2008

Hey All,

dscf3769.JPGOMG what a horrible day out there, I watched this storm brew all morning as I was rushing around trying to get the rooms done. When it unleashed it was hail, sleet and driving winds. As I have said if you are coming to Taupo this weekend for fishing check the river levels, or you may be fishing the Waitahanui with a thousand other anglers!

dscf3773.JPGRoss from TRM showed me his killer rig for Trout the other day, Nice!!!!

dscf0097.JPGI shot out into the Waitahanui early this morning and as I had limited time only fished three pools. I got this very good Jack on my first cast of the morning and landed four other fish as well. I have never known the Waitahanui to have such colour in it for so long. The flow is up and it looks perfect. We have a SW wind blowing in at the moment and the river should get a good trickle of fish over the next few days. NOTE I said should!!!

dscf3772.JPGIf you do come to Taupo and find the rivers to have colour and are heavy with water then a rig like this can be very handy at pulling fish. It is not for everyone and some would not use it at all. It is a size 10 Orange champagne dot Muppett with a Size 10 brightly coloured Glo bug as a point fly. I suggest throwing it on a 8# rod! When biffing, (yes biffing) this type of rig you must have good line speed and don’t try to throw too much line, instead get the line speed up and shoot the line, otherwise you may cop the whole lot in the back of your head.

Have a look at the lake level and how much it has risen in the last 6 weeks. I’ll use the Big Ugly Pile Of Rocks as an example.
