Lake Taupo Trout Fishing Report For The 20th Of August 2008

August 20, 2008

Hey All,

dscf3121.JPGThis season has been a shocker as far as I am concerned, yes the fish have been a little better in condition but are SMALL!!!! The authorities need to pull their head out of their arses on this fast. Yes we have battled some serious weather conditions that have made the fishing challenging at times but this is ridiculous.

dscf3339.JPGWhen two of the best fisherman I know walk into my shop at 9.30 am and tell me they have been skunked in the Waitahanui, that they fish as well if not better than me ,(yes it is possible) then there is a SERIOUS problem in the fishery. When I moved down here four years ago this NEVER happened.  For Gods sake we are in the MIDDLE of the season there should be fish everywhere! I could walk into the Nui at any time of the day, in any conditions, (bar a flood) and pull fish left right and center. Over the past two years this has become harder now to the point where anglers are struggling to hook a fish.

dscf3469.JPGIn the past two days I have received report after report of fish being small and in bad condition, one angler even stating that next year he won’t be buying a seasonal license and will give the entire season a miss to see what happens. Nice one DOC!!

dscf3514.JPGThis isn’t just a Waitahanui issue either, the Hinemaiaia has fished badly, when it is fishable. Reports in from the Tauranaga Taupo are the same with experianced anglers being skunked or having very lean days on there. The Tongariro is not like it was last year either, sorry Ross, i had a reputable guide come into my shop a few days ago and told me he was skunked in there and he NEVER gets skunked.

dscf3599.JPGDOC have their fingers well and trully crossed that September, October and November are the best months for the Taupo district, well they better be FREAKING brilliant guys otherwise there are going to be some farily harsh questions asked of you. imgp1324.JPG

On the forum under Didymo there was a post by a member who said ‘”God don’t worry about Didymo be more concerned about the Taupo fishery as a whole”, fully agree now dude.

My answer to all of this is wait untill the 1st of October and go back country, (rest of new zealand licenese), the fish are bigger and better!!!

Photos today are of scenery as the fish SUCK!!!!!

A very grumpy Shane
