Lake Taupo Trout Fishing Report For The 29th Of July 2008

Hey All,

dscf3709.JPGBack out today with Richard and Ian from Wellington. The guide over the two days was to show them all the rivers except the Tongariro, this river they have no problem taking fish in. As we sucked in the Waitahanui yesterday, (lower and middle reaches) I decided first thing to take them into the upper section. We immediately picked up this very good jack in pig. A solid 4 pound fish that gave Richard a good bashing before we got it to the net. Sorry about the poor quality photo, the flash didn’t fire and then Richard dropped it before I could take another shot at it!

dscf3710.JPGWe ended up landing 4 very good fish from the upper Waitahanui, there weren’t heaps of them in there and you will have to work for them but the quality was excellent and we only saw one other angler. This guy cracked me up as he parked his VERY expensive BMW at the pig pool after opening and closing the gate!!!!!!!!!!!!

dscf3711.JPGFrom there we scuttled down to the Tauranga Taupo. Wow this river has been turned over. Poor old DOC have their work cut out for them here as it looks like ALL the tracks have been destroyed barr one. There is some fantastic water that has opened up as well. I was petrified about loosing gear but the pools seem clean of snags. There were good numbers of Trout in the TT as well, but the angling pressure was very high and we seemed to be following up anglers left right and center.

Both Richard and Ian did really well over the two days landing in excess of thirty trout. All released as well by the way, my landing net has had a real work out!

Take care

Regards Shane, who has to buy a whole heap of Aqua stealth wading boots, (sigh).
