Hey all

Cold start to the day, Lower WaitahanuiI fished the Waitahanui nice and early this morning with Jim from Wellington. The object was to show him the pools and hopefully connect onto a fish or two. we slowly worked our way up the lower section putting through some nice drifts in all my hot spots, all to no avail. It is very hard in the lower Waitahanui at the moment. The Fence pool that has been a good producer at all times of the day came up a blank as well. I was lucky that fish were of a second priority this morning.

We managed to pick up one nice Hen around the cliff pool that had Jim’s Seven weight bent double.

Nice jack Waitahanui River Middle sectionThe middle pools all need some rain to flush them out as a few are starting to silt over, however there were a few more fish in this section and as I said in my last report, some of them are huge. We fished to this Rainbow Jack for over twenty minutes going through my fly box to no avail. It would have gone a good 6.5 pounds as well.

My opinion on the Waitahanui. Upper section if you want to catch some fish, don’t overlook the middle section but the lowers need rain and wind to move the fish in. We are meant to get some wet stuff Wednesday and Thursday.
