I took out Ross from Tongariro River Motel and one of his guests today on the Waitahanui. Vic is from Chicago USA and just wanted to have a fresh approach on the pools. He was awesome to watch cast and mend and although we did manage to pick up a few fish, being there on the water was just ,(if not more) important than hooking up. Ross the” Tongariro slasher” proved the point that you can teach old dogs new tricks, by hooking up in the snag pool and generally fishing very well.
The lower pools were VERY hard going, we never had a strike. If you are going to fish this area then my advice is to take insect repellent as the sand-flies are ferocious at the moment.
There were a few fish in the upper section but we still found it fairly hard going. All the fish hooked up on today took Glo Bugs and with the extra volume in there a little extra weight may help. I would have thought the rain we had may have pushed a group of fish into the Waitahanui but then this side of the lake certainly comes on with some wind. Bring on the wind!!!
Take care out there
