Hey all

Little Hen taken early morningI was up early again this morning and dragged myself over the Hinemaiaia Rip, getting in bang on 5 am. First cast and I was into a little hen of about three pounds. I was using my innovation 8# and this little beast of a fish took me out onto my backing! She went back as did the next four, all the same size. I was using an intermediate line, a black booby and a Lumo tail fly. The booby kept me from snagging the rocky bottom there but I still got deep enough for the Lumo to do the damage. There was good flow this morning.

Jack from the Hinemaiaia ripI went back to the car, had a cup of coffee and rigged up with my type 4 sinking line and a heave and leave. I also tied a size 14 glo Bug on the end for extra effect. I have found that the fish take this little glowie about 60% of the time. It didn’t take long before I was into a VERY good fish that half way through the fight let go of the hook, it felt like a solid trout. Over the next hour I landed two Jacks keeping the one in the photo and having several more strikes. These fish hit the fly with amazing ferocity.

Hope everyone is having a good week.

Regards Shane
