Hey all, I believe we have a problem some where out there in Lake Taupo with the food supply.  Smelting action has become less and less on this side of the lake for the past few years. The Trout have become leaner and leaner. who else out there have had heaps of bad fish and why do you think it is.

yes its been a shocker, when i was up for a whole week, i only got 4 that were oversize and only 1 id even CONSIDER keeping. however that said at about 2 pm on tuesday last week a nice fresh run went through the TT and some very nice fish came out, i was just leaving at the time but me and a mate managed 2 in no time 1 of which was reasonable and 1 a little on the slabby side

Clearly some of the population has struggled - got 10 in a couple of hours on the T.T last week. All but one were freshies with only 3 keepable size??? The lack of complete mixing in Lake Taupo in 2005 seems to have escaped the attention of DOC - for some reason. Should get progressively better in 2008 and back to normal 2009 - fingers x'd.

Well noted trout lips, I read an article about this topic a couple of weeks ago and it sounds plausable.  Probably this and a number of other factors combined.  Looking at the diary some years have been better than others for as long back as I can bear to go.

'Catch' i'll think you'll find that DOC is mostly correct.  5 years ago the Waitahanui was firing at the end of October and well into November.  The Hine was great earlier this year.  There are great fish out there now and somewhere in the Taupo region it is going off, simply a matter of finding them.  The Delta has been great over the last 4 weeks...yeah there are slow patch's but if you are there when its on every boat is hooked up.  All fish were good, no scaby 2 pound 30 cm fish there.  The Tongariro had some great early runs then went a off a bit but reports from Riverstone Backpackers suggest its all on now.  If you fish rivers after a fresh you will hit some good fish.

I fished a couple of small streams in the western bays last week  No problem with fish #'s and quality of fish there either...I'll send you some pictures tomorrow.

I have to say that the fish size and quality hasn't been amazing when i have been down fishing. this said i think it is pretty good to be able to get out and catch fish most trips even though they may not be as big as in previous seasons.

In responce to the locals, i am a teenager and never have really felt intimidated by anyone on the river, some kids were waving a machete around, and the odd rock being thrown, but they dont take much avoiding, just try and stay out of conflict is the best way.

Hi Catch, how was the fish size today?  Getting better?  I still think your about to get one .... of a run.  Timing is the key, all the rivers will fish well after the dump youve just had.  I think we should all wait to see what happens in the next 3 - 4 weeks and as a 'get out clause' you can always say that this season has been stretched with good fish running all the time and you just had to be at the right place at the right time to get them.

Na budge, I have landed by myself and with clients well over 1200 trout this season from both the rivers and the rips and out of that i would say maybe 100 have been good keepable Trout. Some of them have been the most disgusting slabby shitty things ever seen. If you have had a day when there were good fish in the system then well done, but for myself I have been very disappointed this year. Trout lips believes next year will be better and the year after that more so. Fingers crossed otherwise Didymo won't be the only thing we have to worry about in Taupo.

That's terrible odds Catch, have you seen anyone about this problem?  I guess as we get older its harder to attract the pretty ones isn't it.
As an aside do you think the silting problem in the Waitahanui has affected some of old holding pools?  Black Fish just isn't the same yet some pools that have been barren for years seem to now have fish.
