I have a favorite pool on a certain river that has an evening rise that goes close to challenging a kahawai boil up - an awesome sight in its self, but also have a problem. The fish seem to be very selective in what they take - Dry fly i thought, no takers at all - Emerger - Gets a couple of takes then it seams to be ignored as well , can anyone fill me in on what might be a good choice of fly next ? Have tried different types and colours but to no avail. Any info would be great. Thanks.

Try using a small, fine mesh scoop net to catch and identify the insects.

Usually when i slap the little buggars for crawling on the back of my neck i end up with a rather flat caddis - but on trying a caddis emerger , no luck. Is the colour of the fly more important then the general apperance ?? Thanks for the feedback.

Hi juist on the same subject me and a friend went fishing last night and we each caught a trout on mayfly flies ealier in the eveing between 8.30 to 9, then hundereds of caddis were crawlining all over us and alot of trout were rising in the pool, so we changed our flies to caddis and we fished until 10.30 but didn't get one strike, although we foul hooked an eel Shocked.  Do you have any idea why we couldn't hook a trout even though they were rising alot and there were caddis every where? Feedback would be apperciated asap, or you can send me a message because we will go out again tonight and see if we can catch any.

put on a caddis emerger or even nymph!! if you cant see what theyre feeding on. chuck on some floatant, cast downstream and hold the rod high so you get the little < "v" > as the fly swings and youll get takes, guaranteed. if its somewhere around kaimanawas chances are at this time of the year mozzies, green beetles and even cicadas are always a good choice. heading back to my fav river, the rangetikei from the 12th to the 18th. there will definitely be some evening rises and ill tell you how it goes. fish landed on my youtube vid was on a caddis NYPMH fished in this way. crazy i know but it works...

i put floatant on a caddis if i cant see whats rising. if you can see the rise but the fish are rising its likely its caddis. you can use any caddis with this technique, but upon trying using nymphs with floatant (which still dont float completely) but holding the rod high so they wont sink so much and making them make a "v" behind them on the swing you can induce vicious takes to fish that may otherwise be selective

Yep, scoop the water. From your description (Kawhai boiling?), sounds like they are taking sub-surface. That would be emergers then? Can you do that "whoes ya father" lift thingie? Idea is to imitate the nymph lifting through the water column to the surface.
I think I'd be having a big deer hair dry with a hair & copper tied about 9-12 inches below. When it swings the nymph should lift, it's a two way bet.

geoff the fishie you have me confused but thank you anyways, 8theb8 will try your suggestion, i know its a subsurface rise because no matter how many times you swing the ol' deer hair caddis there are no takers, even on the swing (and with the "v" thing geoff) they are left. but i will try with a dropper - thanks for the feedback, i am off to the pool friday so i'll let ya know how i get on.  thanks again

Hi eveyone me and the same friend went fishing again last night, I hooked a trout and lost it, then hooked another again and landed this one I hooked both on mayflies. Then again the caddis were rising I just used a caddis dry fly and my friend used a caddis dry fly and an emerger he got a strike and I got nothing so I think it works. I will try you ideas tonight and see if we have success. So do you mean tie a deer hair caddis and a nymph or just a nymph???

Well entering the pool with high hopes , it happened again ! Haha Buggars were thrashing the surface (or subsurface) flat out - so i tried it all the "v" thing, the dry with dropper, nymphing emerger - i tell ya i was busier than a one armed bricky in Bhagdad ! Most of the sucess came on a home made parachute hackle fly on the swing with a little twich thrown in for good times ! Thank you all for the comments guess this is a battle that will go on for a while ....... damn fishing will be the end of me..... haha Grin tight lines !
