Now hearing:
"LATEST NEWS, it has been decided that felt soled wading boots will not be banned in NZ on the first of October. New laws will take affect one year from now. Biosecurity NZ has declared the entire South Island a "controlled area for Didymo"
AND
The North Island sport fishing regs are out. You probably have them. Page 6 says keep didymo out of the North Is. Page 11 #2 Authorised tackle 2.4 "No person shall fish for sports fish by using felt soled waders or footwear incorporating or having attached a sole of felt, matted or woven fibrous material when sports fishing."
Wonder which one it is??

Ok this has been over- ruled and we are back to having them banned! I had DOC in my shop over the weekend and I asked them this question, sorry guys. What is interesting to note is that you can still wear felt soled boots in rivers across the country you just can't be a fisherman while you do it!!!
My opinion on Didymo guys, after months of talking to people and sending emails and letters to our government is this. Bio NZ were very slow at doing anything about the spread in the South Island and they have given up the fight there all together. The shameful thing about this is that there is still no boarder control between the South and North Islands. They are waiting for it to get here!! If we were to identify the most at risk to spread Didymo into the North all you would have to say is anything and anyone coming from the South Island, and yet the gate is still wide open. Very shameful and I hope whoever has the power to make that decision gets huge boils on their arse!!!
What it comes down to is that we all have to prey it doesn't get to the North Island, if it does Check, clean and dry is our only means of defense and that one is proven not to work, for WHATEVER reasons.
Thank you all who have voiced their opinions on this, and for those who have read the threads, if anything new pops up about Didymo it will be posted here.

Hi all,
Over the last 18 months to 2 years I have purchased a number of books all about fly fishing (being a novice trying to learn as much as I can.)
I suspect a great number of other avid fisho's do the same including a huge number of tourists (checking out NZ fishing waters before the come to our fine land)
To date I have not come across a single mention of the threat of Didimo!! Given that a huge part of the fight against this crap is awareness, I would of thought it would have been a good Idea for some of these authors to at least mention didimo and maybe to remember to clean & dry etc, especially as most of thses authors are guides and it is their livelyhood.
Just a thought
Cheers

So we have gone through another summer without this stuff getting up here, is it luck or is it something in the North Island that it does not like? Are there any south Islanders who read the forum who could let us know what the South Island is like. Are the Rivers getting rid of it naturally or is it staying the same? I would love to know.

I'll bring this up again huh!
So far this year I have had three separate episodes, where overseas fisherman have come from the South Island using the Inter Islander and have not been checked or asked if they have fished any rivers. They have either been in cars or in camper-vans. The one today still had wet waders and boots!!
I have voiced my opinion enough to sound like a broken record on what I believe should happen, instead of waiting for it to come to us. Hell even if they put a little effort into the crossing from the South to the North it would be something!
scary stuff!
