Yoh, At this time EVERY year, this subject arises. Every year, mind you, sage advice is offered to avoid altercations on the river. Every year the SAME people seem to forget themselves and gorge on the fishing opportunities. You know from their technique that they are NOT new to fly fishing!! I would suggest these are the same self centred people who couldn't give a stuff about didymo control because all they care about is themselves. A long time ago, in a place not far away (sorry Mr Lucas). I handed a 25kg standup rod to a guy who hadn't caught a fish before. It actually had a 150kg stripe marlin attached. The look on this guys face was the same one I had seen on my childrens faces all those years when they fely that sprat biting. I can tell you that look/expression is absolutely inspiring! I would suggest it is one of the reasons guides (Speak Shane?) actually take up the profession, it is soooo rewarding to see someone catch a fish for the very first time. I recall my father-in-law demonstrating to me (many years ago) how to move a 'hog' from the Jones pool. After asking several times and moving around this guy several times, absolutely no movement at all. Tempers were getting pretty hot! I then found out what the #2 flies were for as one was quitely tied on in clear water conditions, a big black hoary looking thing it was. A couple of retrieves past the offenders legs to give him a good look at it. A few more words of advice and the offender seemed to have sprung a leak in his waders about the same time as my in-law freed himself from a 'snag' Bugger! The six other anglers at the pool gave a round of applause. Anyone else got any similar yarns on the same topic? Not just whinges and whines, actual remedies with a bit of sweet justice thrown in? The guys fishing at the Major Jones causing a traffic jam. They hadn't moved while I had two smokes on the bank. So I changed to a wet line, advised them as such and commenced to hook fish from above them. They started to complain about my lack of manners. When I reminded them that I was following their lead in the manners department (in a loud voice), I was joined by the rest of the guys who were waiting their turn. The offenders moved off, somewhat shame faced. So, how was your experience? (and solution?) And never mind the gentleman tactics, they just don't seem to work because these people are NOT gentlemen. They have absolutely no respect for anyone but themselves.
