Hey there everyone - i have decided that this summer is the time to venture out of the Taupo district and give a bit of wilderness water a good hiding ! Only problem is (apart from getting another licence which i wont comment/vent my fury on) i dont know where to go ! Sure the waipunga or the whanganui are all mentioned but where do ya go ? I mean i have seen the fish and game pamphlets and the spot x books but is there spots were you can park your vehicle and not have to worry about coming back and have it lightened of its contents or stolen ? You always hear a few storys about long walks out in neoprene waders in 30deg heat because of stolen cars and no cellphone coverage - fishing tales i'm sure haha (i still hold hope that not all remote parking spots are thief magnets) - so if anyone can give me a few ideas where to start or even wants to go for a back country fish together let me know ! Cheers everyone - also has anyone walked the poled route along the poronui lodge to the huts ? Is it worth the walk for the fishing Huh Cheers

Spend 500 odd bucks on Shane for the day and it will be the best 500 you ever spent.

Think of the $500 like an insurance policy. You don't have to worry about your car (it is Shane's car - let him worry), you don't have to worry about access points (he'll take you there). After all, how many chances do you get to do the back country? And once you go, you'll know more than ever. I used Shane (he likes to be used hee hee  Shocked  ) early this year and I would encourage you to go that way. Seriously, think of it like an investment in time and effort, and protection money for your car - and a great way to learn. Check out how much your car insurance Excess is if you need to make a claim on your trashed car.

Ok Tie1on, its seems no one wants to help you out, apart from good old geoff_Fishie.
Just a couple of things mate.
Never wear Neoprene's in 30Deg of weather, Wet wade in the warmer months and or buy a cheap pair of brethables.
Cars get broken into in town so don't stress to much about the back country. Take your cell phone with you. Most people are supper friendly and would let you use their phone if it came to that. A pisser I know as far as inconvenience but not a big worry.
Also let somebody know were you are going and what time they can expect you home.
All books like John Kents and spot X give good details of access points, get a NZ map find the roads, make a plan and go explore.Simple as that and very rewarding. It's half the fun dude.
