Great to see the catfish are becoming more prominent. They have actually been there for some time hovering up smelt eggs.
What can be done about them?
One of the TRM inmates has a an idea as follows:
Hi Ross,
Been thinking about what to do about those catfish.
Suggest that you mobilise anglers to work traps set in the lake.  You then chop up and boil the catfish (at the hot pools ?) - to destroy enzymes and parasites.  The catfish chunks are then fed back to the trout at the Marine Reserve that will be set up off the cliffs or somewhere else nice.
Tourists will pay to go out with you in boats and feed the trout
1.  The numbers of catfish are reduced
2.  Catfish are converted directly back into trout
3.  DoC needs a marine reserve in Taupo - they have been putting them everywhere else
4.  A new tourist attraction is created with protected tame trout swimming around the boats and growing to massive sizes.
5.  Fishermen get to feel like they are doing something
6.  If the trout don’t like the catfish then other catfish will.  Keep trapping the attracted and concentrated catfish .

Hope this gets you thinking about the possibilities.
