Good lord two reports in a week!
I went into the Tauranga Taupo as mentioned in my last report. I have fished the TT a few times over the various summers we have had and have always been pleasantly surprised. There have always been good numbers of trout lurking in the Riffles and deep water of the TT over the hot summer months. Why not.. The Cicadas have plenty of bush to hatch in and then fall into the water. I am sure the Tauranga Taupo produces good hatches and food in general for our summer trout. I spotted trout pretty much everywhere on Friday but to be honest the water conditions meant the trout had the upper hand and we came away empty handed. There were some nice brown trout mixed in with the Rainbows.
The Tongariro for me hasn’t fired like it did last season. The Browns have been slow to turn up and some of the Rainbows have been well below parr!!
That comment leads me into what this winter season may be like. I am getting report after report of plenty of trout in the lake but with 80% being well below average on condition. This is probably the first season I have not fished the rips for about ten years, so I can’t see for myself what is lining up in the river mouths. I am seeing them in the River systems however and as I say the reports coming in from the lake are not good at all!! I will be keeping a strict eye on the first few months of April and May for our first spawners to show up. This normally sets the tide for the rest of the season. last year we had a great start to the season and it followed through, as they had all been well fed.
I should post before the weekend as well so keep in touch.
