July is the month that really kicks off the winter season for me. June was dry with very settled weather and that does nothing for the running spawning trout in Taupo. We need the cold wet blustery weather that winter normally brings. July has always brought this and by the end of it the rivers should have a good supply of spawning trout in them.
The Waitahanui was hard going in June, I think out of the whole month we probably had two days that it blew Westerly and so the trout only came in small dribs and drabs. It was very hard going. The westerly’s should start coming and this river will load up. I still get heaps of requests for guiding on this awesome river and I have never had a customer go away unhappy. Even if the fishing is tough the scenery and spell binding pools make up for it. being a smaller river it will give you a few extra skills up your sleeve if you only fish the bigger rivers.
The Hinemaiaia was the same as the Waitahanui and in my opinion has not fired at all yet. I will certainly be fishing this trophy stream in July as when the big Jacks start to go through it is nothing short of brilliant!! Last year I got into a group of Jacks below the State Highway bridge when the water level was high and had a ball. I must have hooked into at least ten of these brutes and never landed one. The water was too high for me to go downstream with them and so had to try and muscle them in quickly, not easy when you are hooked into 8 pounds plus of pissed off Jack!! There is not a great amount of water down below the bridge at the moment but it does not get the pressure and if you strike it right it is tremendous fun.
I thought with all the rain we have had, that the Tauranga Taupo would have “”Gone Off””. Not to sure what is going on in this river, apparently the drop off has gone cold as well!! I have pulled a few trout out in the lower section but have not ventured to far up the river. July is a great month for the TT so I will get in there soon.
The Tongariro fished HARD in June, even when the trout were in there they didn’t want to take much. I had one good morning on there in June and that was it, apart from that it was the occasional trout. Again July is the start in this river.
We need more steady rain with fewer dry spells in between, I am sure it is coming so keep an eye on the river levels then get here at the right time and have some fun.
